SCENT OF JASMINE

for Benie

I watch fire consume the flesh around your face. Flames melt your lips. You look like you are barring your teeth. That’s not like you. I don’t remember a time when you snarled. You were always smiling. Men and women, children and babies…you went up to them all, wagging your tail with gentle enthusiasm. Even when they shooed you away, you moved on happily to greet another. When we walked along the lava ocean cliffs, I watched while you waded in tide pools, dunking your head in the water, trying to catch fish. You never caught any, but that didn’t faze you.

The flames continue to engulf the flesh of your head. Your soft parts disappear. Only your bones remain.

A golden harmony, equanimity and peace pervade the air. The fire is fiercely hot, so I position myself on a rock at the periphery of the stone circle to move away from the searing heat. Your body has been burning quietly in the center of the circle for many hours.
